Look for an Evergreen (and Find Guac)

Today is Look for an Evergreen Day — a holiday about finding something that stays green when everything else fades. A symbol of hope, resilience, and mildly overpriced tree lots.

Naturally, I thought of guacamole. It’s green. It’s comforting. It brings people together. It felt symbolic — my own personal evergreen.

For about three minutes.

Because guac doesn’t stay green. It browns faster than optimism in December. By the time I finished the metaphor, it had already oxidized into something that looked like it had opinions about my life choices. Turns out, it’s not a symbol of endurance at all. It’s decay, dressed as dip.

Still, there’s something kind of poetic about that. Maybe not everything that starts green needs to last. Maybe some things — like guac, and hope, and the limited shelf life of seasonal joy — are meant to be enjoyed while they’re fresh.

So no, guac isn’t evergreen. But for a brief, perfect moment, it was. And honestly, that’s enough.
